Initially reluctant to speak out, residents living in close vicinity of the temple in Dadri's Bisara village, which was used to announce that Mohamad Akhlaq had slaughtered a cow, seem to be in two minds on whether or not give details of the men responsible of spreading the rumour that Akhlaq had stored cow meat at his residence.

Caught between police investigators and 'powerful men', many residents here feel that it might be a risk not worth taking, but they do have a name for those responsible for the death of Akhlaq. Villagers here said that the village has its own quota of goons also known as 'Dabangs'. Out of the 10 people identified and named in the FIR, six have been arrested, while four remain absconding. The FIR also mentions 4-5 more people who are yet to be identified and according to some police will not identify the mean anytime soon.

The village's population is divided into Rajputs, Muslims and Prajapati community. The temple which lies at the heart of the village, is surrounded by homes belonging to both Rajputs and Prajapati's. A family from the community spoke to dna but requested the paper not to reveal their names.

"The temple is usually closed during the nights. The priest, some weeks ago, had decided to lock the doors after repeatedly seeing some youth getting drunk and creating ruckus outside the temple. That night we heard 2-3 men calling out for the priest. When the door to the temple was not opened, the youth started to abuse the priest. Soon after that the door opened and an announcement was made that a cow has been slaughtered in a house near the transformer and it is requested that Hindu Samaj be gathered at the said location," said a woman in her 70s claiming to have heard the announcement. Their neighbour, also from the Prajapati community corroborated the sequence of events.

The theory of 'Dabangs' heading the mob, was also put forward by Garima Sisodia, whose two brothers are now arrested for being a part of the group that killed Akhlaq. "The police will not arrest the one responsible. My brothers are educated youth who mind their own business," said Garima. Vakeela, her Muslim neighbour, visited the family on Thursday afternoon and assured that ' God will do justice'.

"My own son, Ilyas, was on the streets when Urmila (Garima's mother) sent him back home. She told him that he should go back in case things get out of hands which they did," said Vakeela.

Investigators here believe that youths had forced the temple priest to make the announcement but have failed to identify the youths. The FIR registered in the murder has booked 10 people under section 323,304, 506,307,427 and 458 of the Indian Penal Code. Section 302 (murder), section 147 (rioting), 148 (rioting armed with deadly weapons and 149 (unlawful assembly) were added to the FIR later.

A resident told dna that these so-called 'Dabangs' have been throwing their weight around due to their close proximity to politicians. "They are the ones who organise political rallies here," the resident said.

While the district magistrate, Rajesh Kumar, said that the probe is underway and police will in the coming days be able to identify the 4-5 unknown men in the FIR, Additional Superintendent of Police, Sanjay Singh, refused to delve on whether the unknown men have been identified yet.
