The cyclonic storm 'Phethai', which is set to hit Andhra Pradesh coast, is likely to trigger heavy rainfall in several parts of Odisha and West Bengal by Monday, the Met department said Sunday.

Kakinada during 17th Dec afternoon. However, due to unfavourable environmental conditions, it is likely to weaken slightly before landfall.

The Meteorological (MeT) department warned that the cyclone Phethai will intensify and move towards the state of Andhra Pradesh.

The Met department Sunday warned of heavy rain in many districts of South Bengal on Monday as an effect of the cyclone 'Phethai', which is likely to make landfall in Andhra Pradesh.
The system is likely to move north-eastwards after making landfall on Monday afternoon, it said.
Heavy rain is likely over one or two places in the districts of Howrah, East and West Midnapore, Purulia, Bankura, West Burdwan, Jhargram and Hooghly on Monday.
Strong wind, with speed reaching 30 to 40 km per hour is likely to blow over northwest Bay of Bengal, the weatherman said in its forecast

While the sky remained overcast in many parts of the state Sunday, districts like Gajapati, Ganjam, Rayagada and Kalahandi are expected to be lashed by heavy rain under the impact of the cyclonic storm, the Meteorological Centre here said in a bulletin.
Many places in Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nuapada, Baragarh, Balangir, Jharsuguda and Sambalpur districts would experience heavy rainfall on Monday, it said.

‘The deep depression in the south-eastern area of the Bay of Bengal has moved to the northern side with a speed of 17 Kilometres an hour and has now intensified and developed into a cyclonic storm named ‘Phethai’. It is very likely to move to the northeastern side and cross Andhra Pradesh coast between Ongole and Kakinada during December 17, ‘the statement from the meteorological department read.

The department also predicted light to moderate rain and thunderstorm in parts of Odisha on Sunday. It also predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall in various districts of the state.

The statement also said, ‘Light to moderate rain/thundershower likely to occur at many places over districts of south Odisha and a few places over districts of north Odisha on December 16, at many places over districts of Odisha on 17. and at a few places over districts of Odisha on December 18.’

The Department informed that Gajapati, Ganjam, Rayagada and Kalahandi district would experience heavy rainfall on Sunday. While on Monday, heavy rainfall is expected in various districts including Kalahandi, Malkangiri. Koraput, Rayagada, Nawarangpur.
