In an unfortunate incident, a 12-year-old girl died on Friday after she was hit by an elevator in the building while peeping through the safety window of the door. The deceased, Qunut Zaveri — a class 8 student — lived with her family on the 6th floor of a 7-storey building in Bandra (East)'s Beharampada.

According to Nirmal Nagar police, the incident took place at around 6.30 pm on Friday when Zaveri and her cousin were waiting to take the elevator to go downstairs and play. Curiosity got the better of Zaveri, who peeped through the safety window of the elevator door to see whether the lift was coming from downstairs. Unfortunately, the lift, which was descending from the 7th floor, hit the girl on her head. Zaveri's cousin came to her aid and pulled her out immediately. The cousin proceeded to alert the other family members."The glass and grill of the safety door were missing, allowing Zaveri to peep through the opening out of curiosity. She succumbed to her injuries during treatment," said Vasudev Jamdade of Nirmal Nagar Police Station.

"We have recorded the statements of Zaveri's cousin and neighbours. We could not file an FIR as the society she lives in is not a registered one. We do not know who to register an FIR against," said Jamdade.

Meanwhile, the residents of the building she lived in said, "The glass of the safety window has been missing for the last two years. The accident could have been averted if the glass or grill was in place," said Imran Khan, the deceased's uncle.
