Cuba 'hot destination' for US travellers post normalisation of diplomatic relations

Since US President Barack Obama's move to normalise diplomatic relations with Cuba, travellers keen to visit the island country have been thronging US travel websites to learn more about the destination.

ABC News reported US website traffic on TripAdvisor about travel to Cuba spiked 293 percent on Wednesday, December 17, compared to the previous day, according to company data. An opt-in online poll hosted by TripAdvisor showed that 54 percent of more than 1,500 respondents said "eased travel restrictions will increase their interest in visiting Cuba in 2015.

Erin Millard, a spokesperson for TripAdvisor reportedly said that Cuba was a much sought-after destination among the global TripAdvisor community, with Havana being named the No.1 Destination on the Rise in the 2013 TripAdvisor Travellers' Choice awards.

He added that in the wake of Obama's decision last Wednesday to mend diplomatic relation with the country, users have been engaged in discussions on the TripAdvisor Forums about what it would mean for US travelers, the report said.
