United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), which is the apex international authority in propagating ways of protecting the environment, promotes celebration of World Environment Day (WED) on June 5 every year, to focus on the importance of saving the environment for a better tomorrow.

With a view to promote the UNEP's initiatives, the National Safety Council (NSC), a non-profit making autonomous body set up by the Ministry of Labour and Environment for promoting safety, health and environment at workplace, ropes in its 7,000 corporate members to join the WED celebrations.

The corporates orgainse different programmes to enlighten their workers and community around to spread awareness of different ways of protecting the environment from pollution.
To make the celebrations meaningful, NSC brings out many promotional materials such as safety posters depicting UNEP theme, banners and safety publications focusing on the importance of saving the environment.

"For the last 15 years, NSC is promoting WED and every year the number of organisations joining the celebrations goes up showing that the corporates are really interested to protect the environment," said Madan Kulkarni, director, NSC and in-charge of the WED campaign.

"Every year, we bring out safety posters on the UNEP theme which is highly appreciated by stakeholders all over the country," said VB Sant, director-general, NSC.

'Raise your voice and not the seal level for saving the coastal ocean and islands' is UNEP's theme for this year's WED celebrations. Explaining the meaning of the theme, Kulkarni said, "Carbon emissions has heating effect on the atmosphere, which leads to global warming. With increased emissions, ice melts and overflows to the sea, thusraising the sea level. The need of the hour is to control CO2 emissions through use of alternate energy sources such as solar, wind and tidal to reduce the effects of global warming."

Corporates wishing to celebrate WED on June 5 can contact the NSC's head office at CBD-Belapur for guidance and procurement of promotional materials.
