A day after leaders from the Darjeeling met Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee — which the CM had termed as initiation of the peace process — police arrested two including a Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) leader in a case of grenade attack on Kalimpong Police Station.

Sources said that police had arrested Ashok Rai in connection with the blast, and after interrogating him they arrested GJM leader Vijay Chetri on Wednesday.

Despite the state's claim that the meet was a 'positive one', reinstating police picketing at several areas in the hills on Wednesday indicated a tense situation.

The five-member GJM delegation which met the CM on Tuesday at Nabanna, the state secretariat, will reach the hills on Thursday and a rally will be organised there on Thursday where GJM leaders would elaborate the outcome of the meeting with CM.

"We insisted that the demand for separate Gorkhaland be at the top of the agenda. After the delegation returns, they will first address a public meeting and then will talk to the central committee in the presence of Bimal Gurung," said a senior GJM leader.

He also said that so far there was no question of lifting the indefinite strike. "Our men are being killed, arrested and implicated in false cases by the state government. How can they talk of lifting bandh under these conditions," the leader added.

He added that police picketing which was retrieved since August 15 had returned at Sonada and nearby areas. He added that there is a chance of tightening the security by Thursday.

It was also found out that hunger strike by members of the youth wing of GJM which was lifted after a meeting with the Central leaders, might be resumed.

Bimal Gurung, after the meet with the CM, said, "If she (Mamata) cannot recommend Gorkhaland, she can give a no-objection to our demand for Gorkhaland. After that, we will talk to the Central government about it."

Analysis

Even after conducting a meet aimed at restoring peace in Darjeeling, the situation hasn’t improved much.
The CM and protesting leaders expressed a clear difference of opinion on how they will deal with the situation at hand.
This difference is also giving ammunition to state opposition to point fingers at Mamata-led state.
