A controversy erupted on social media and ruffled feathers of DMK party members. The party's heir apparent MK Stalin was in Sivaganga district when he reportedly decided to go to the Sri Sowmya Narayana Perumal Thirukovil temple in Thirukoshtiyur with his wife Durga. His party cadres also followed him to the temple.

The temple visit by Stalin stirred controversy since DMK is an atheist party. The fact that a leader of this party went to the temple has sent the party into a tizzy. Stalin, however, has clarified saying that he went only went to see the ancient sculptures in the temple. Media reports state that, at the temple, he was given all the honours accorded to VIPs by the temple priests.

Stalin has been busy campaigning across Tamil Nadu for the upcoming elections over the last few weeks. “Mudiyattum Vidiyattum” (let it end and let the sun rise) has been the theme of his campaign, a theme that has also been trending on social media. The politician has also been trying out new ways of attracting attention, like taking an auto ride in pink shirt and trousers to make the political campaign more youth-friendly.
