Cold wave conditions continued unabated in Himachal Pradesh with Keylong recording minus 10.3 degrees Celsius on Saturday, even as mercury dipped by few notches in spite of a clear and sunny day in the state.

According to MeT office, the high altitude tribal areas reeled under arctic conditions with mercury staying between minus 15 and minus 22 degrees C while Keylong shivered at minus 10.3 degrees C, and Manali recorded minimum temperatures at minus 3.8 degrees C, followed by Kalpa and Una minus 1.8 degrees C. Una in Shiwalik foot hills experienced the coldest night with mercury dipping minus 1.8 degrees C, below freezing point, while Bhuntar and Sundernagar minus 0.6 degrees C, Solan 0.5 degrees C, Nahan 2.1 degrees C, Shimla 3.0 degrees C and Dharamshala 4.4 degrees C.

Thick ground frost occurred in mid and higher hills while the towns along the river banks remained engulfed in thick fog in the morning hours, reducing visibility and hampering vehicular traffic. Water pipes froze and burst at many places in higher hills, disrupting water supply while unannounced power cuts added to misery of the people. All natural sources of water including lakes, springs, rivulets and tributaries of major rivers were frozen in high altitude areas, affecting hydropower generation.

The day temperatures rose marginally and SunderNagar was warmest in the region with maximum temperature at 19.7 degrees C, while Solan and Bhuntar recorded a high of 17.8 degrees C and 16.3 degrees C, followed by Nahan 15.5 degrees C, Shimla 14.2 degrees C, Dharamshala 14 degrees C, Una 13.8 degrees C, Manali 10.0 degrees C and Kalpa 8.8 degrees C. The local MeT office has predicted a dry weather in the region till January 2 next month.
