Chief minister Narendra Modi’s initiative for educating girls seems to be paying off. His personal and constant efforts record reveals that funds amounting to more than Rs22.38 crore have been collected in the past six and a half years by CM’s Girl Child Education Fund (Kanya Kelavani Nidhi). Moreover, during the same period, Rs9.59 crore were used for girl child education in the state, and in the past three years the fund has been used to provide assistance to a total of 33,410 girls.
A highly placed source in the state government said that “in the last six and a half years, thousands people, commoners as well as the VIPs, have donated from a few rupees to a few lakhs to the Girl Child Education Fund. So far, we have collected Rs22.38 crore, a part of which was used during 2006-07 and 2008-09 to provide grants or awards to 33,410 girls for further education.”
The source further said that “donation to the CM’s Girl Child Education Fund has been exempted under the Income Tax Act’s section 80G (5), which is also one of the reasons why people have come forward to give donation. CM, other ministers and senior babus have also tried to generate awareness for donation to the fund.
Usually, the CM and other ministers receive donation cheques during various public functions, which they contribute to the fund. In fact, the CM also donates the money generated through sale of various gifts given to him. So far Rs3.5 crore has been donated to the fund through sale of gifts given to CM.”
The CM Girl Child Education Fund provides computers to girl students of medical/engineering and coaching to students of class XI and XII science students of 30 most backward talukas in the state. The fund also provides assistance of Rs10,000 to each girl preparing for civil service and those who get admission in SPIPA.
Every year under this fund, government presents a cash prize of Rs5,000 to the first three girl students of SSC and HSC from each of the 30 talukas. The fund is also used to give award to three physically challenged girls, who have topped in exams, from each of the 30 talukas.
