Eid festivities and prayers in the valley were marred by several clashes between protesters and security forces and a killing of an Army jawan in ceasefire.

A 21-year-old Army jawan, Bikas Gurung, was killed when Pakistani troopers targeted a patrol party along the line of control in Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir.

Militants also fired at a security forces party at Lasjan on the outskirts of the city, injuring a CRPF Jawan. Constable Dinesh Paswan has been shifted to 92 Base Hosptial at Army's Badamibagh in Srinagar.

The grenade blast which killed a protester took place at Brakpora village in Anantnag district of south Kashmir.

A Kashmiri man also carried an Islamic State (IS) group flag during clashes in Srinagar.

Clashes between protestors and law enforcing agencies were reported from Sopore and Kupwara areas. One person sustained injuries in the clashes in Safakadal area of Srinagar city soon after the prayers.

Muslims from all walks of life made a beeline for Eidgahs (prayer ground) and mosques to offer Eid prayers as a thanksgiving for the month-long fasting of Ramadhan. Big gatherings of Eid prayers were also held in Sonawar and Soura Shrines in the heart of the city, they said, adding similar gatherings were held at all districts headquarters and major towns of the Kashmir Valley.

Meanwhile, the Army cancelled the exchange of sweets between the Pakistani Army and the Indian side on the occasion of Eid.

Eleven BSF troops have so far been killed in cross-border firing incidents along the International Border (IB) in Jammu and Kashmir this year, the highest casualty figure for the border force in a year in the past five years, the latest data revealed.

There will not be any exchange of sweets at Attari border on the occasion of Eid, on Saturday, between the Border Security Force (BSF) troops and the Pakistani Rangers, as per sources.

This came in the light of simmering tension between India and Pakistan after the ceasefire violations in the Jammu region.

The sweet exchange between the two forces is a usual trend on the special occasions, such as Eid and Diwali. According to the sources, Pakistani rangers showed interest in going ahead with the ritual, but BSF told them no.

Meanwhile, Mohd Hanif, the father of Rifleman Aurangzeb, who was abducted and later killed by terrorists in Pulwama's Gusoo, made an emotional appeal to the Centre and the Jammu and Kashmir government to eliminate militancy from the state, as he laid his son to rest.

Since few days, the state has been witnessing a huge spurt in terror activity.

Earlier on Thursday, veteran journalist and editor of Rising Kashmir newspaper Shujaat Bukhari was shot dead by terrorists in Press Colony in Srinagar.

The incident has drawn a huge outrage in the Valley with many calling it an 'act of cowardice'.
