CID personnel, teacher arrested for drug trade in Jalandhar

The accused identified as Pavitar Singh, from Mehandipur village was an employee of the Punjab police and had been working in the CID wing for the past 15 years.

Stepping up its crackdown on drugs, Punjab Police on Saturday arrested an employee of the CID wing in Jalandhar and a Physical Education teacher working in a renowned private school for alleged possession of drugs. Both arrests were made in Chandigarh.

The accused identified as Pavitar Singh, from Mehandipur village was an employee of the Punjab police and had been working in the CID wing for the past 15 years. He was presently posted as Assistant Munshi at CID headquarters in Jalandhar.

His accomplice, Amanpreet Singh, a resident of Kabir Avenue in Jalandhar was working as a Physical Education teacher in DIPS Chain of schools in Jalandhar. The accused were halted at a specially established naka when they were going in a Swift car. Police recovered 2 kgs of opium and 20 grams of heroin from their possession. The two were booked under relevant sections of the NDPS Act and taken in police custody on further interrogation of their network of distributors.

"We had received a tip off that the two had been involved in drug trafficking and supplying drugs in the area. One of them is a teacher and school authorities have stated that he was teaching Physical Education. It is to be investigated on who all they used to supply the drugs to. We have formed teams to nab those involved in drug trade," SSP Gurpreet Singh Bhullar, told DNA.

Congress-led Punjab government has committed to wipe out drugs from the state within four weeks of coming into power. Not only has the government formed a Special Task force to formulate a plan to end the menace, it has also directed district police officials to launch crackdown on the ground.

Special campaigns have been initiated by the district police across the state and separate teams of senior police officials have been formed to crackdown on those involved in drug trade.

"Apart from arresting the accused and enforcement of law, we are also organising special awareness camps for youth in association with schools and colleges. A special helpline has also been launched," said Bhullar.
