Children's Day: Google features Pune schoolgirl's art as Google Doodle

Google celebrated Children's Day on Friday by using a child's painting as the Google Doodle in their homepage.

 A doodle by a Pune schoolgirl artfully depicting the natural and cultural richness of Assam has been featured today on the Google India homepage on the occasion of Children's Day.

Vaidehi Reddy, a class IX student of Army Public School, was adjudged the winner of this year's India Doodle4Google (D4G) contest in which there were more than a million entries from over 2,100 schools across 50 cities.

Through their annual competition 'Doodle 4 Google', Vaidehi Reddy's colourful sketch on Assam was selected as the Google Doodle marking Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru's 125 birth anniversary also fondly celebrated as Children's Day. 

The winning doodle titled "Natural and Cultural Paradise - Assam" in which Reddy depicted the state's famed wildlife by sketching the one-horned rhinoceros, the tiger, tea bushes and bamboo trees. A woman performing the Bihu dance carrying a 'japi' (traditional hat) is also there in the doodle.

The theme for this year was ‘a place in India I wish to visit’. Vaidehi Reddy, this year's 'Doodle4Google' winner Pune, made a painting on Assam called 'Natural and Cultural Paradise-Assam'.  Her art which has has colourful drawings of a Bihu dancer and Indian tiger and rhinoceros depicts the state's culture, wilderness and art.

Her entry was selected by a jury comprising political cartoonist Ajit Ninan, Art Director Children's Publishing at ACK Media Savio Mascarenhas and Google Doodle team lead Ryan Germick.

The contest was started in India in 2009 and gives the opportunity to children from class 1 to 10 to design the Doodle based on a specific theme every year. The winner's doodle goes live on the Google homepage in India. 

The contest had got over a million entries this year from more than 1700 schools across 50 cities. Twelve finalists were chosen before declaring the final winner.
