Chennai: Traffic cops tie up young man to pole, brutally thrash him for not wearing helmet, video goes viral

A video of a young man being thrashed by Chennai traffic police at the busy market area of T Nagar in the broad daylight has gone viral on the social media inviting strong criticism for the police brutality.

A video of a young man being thrashed by Chennai traffic police at the busy market area of T Nagar in the broad daylight has gone viral on the social media inviting strong criticism for the police brutality.

In three video clips circulated on the social media, the young man was pushed to a streetlamp and assaulted by the policemen even as his mother and sister were seen shouting for help.

The young man was identified as Prakash, 21, who had gone for shopping along with his mother and sister on a two-wheeler on Sunday, was stopped by the traffic police for not wearing a helmet and riding in triples.

Police has remanded Prakash, who works as a driver, in Puzhal prison on Sunday after booking him under Section 294 (b) (uttering obscene words in public place), 332 (Voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from his duty) and 427 (Mischief causing damage to the amount of fifty rupees).

It all started when Prakash protested against the behaviour of one of the policemen and refused to pay the fine. There was a heated argument between Prakash and other policemen. When a policeman grabbed Prakash by his collar and pulled him, his hand accidentally brush the epaulette of a policeman and it fell down. Police then started thrashing him by tying him to a street lamp.

In the melee, Prakash’s mother who was crying for help also pushed down several times by the policemen.

With the video going viral, the Chennai police issued a statement saying that when Prakash was asked to pay fine, he behaved in a rude manner and began to shout at the policemen. It said that he punched in the face of the sub-inspector and damaged a walkie-talkie. “He was overpowered and was arrested. He was then produced in a court and remanded in the prison,” the statement said.

The incident has occurred close on the heels of a pregnant woman was killed in Tiruchy after a policeman kicked the two-wheeler in which was riding pillion with her husband. The policeman chased the couple as the woman’s husband was riding the bike without wearing a helmet.
