In an unusual robbery that took place in Chennai city, a gang of seven men made away with seven new Hyundai Creta SUV’s from the automakers storage yard at Manapakkam on Wednesday.
According to a report in The New Indian Express, the cars were parked in the yard with the keys left on the door. The cars were meant to be shifted to the showrooms in the day; however the gang beat up the security guard and made away with the vehicles.
The police said that at around 4 am the gang is alleged to have gained entry into the yard. The gang threw stones at the gates prompting the security guard Manoharan, 54, to come out. The gang soon overpowered him and stole the vehicles.
In a few minutes, the police were informed about the robbery by the security guard. The police gave a quick chase resulting in the gang to abandon their vehicles at Gangai Amman Kovil Street in Valasaravakkam.
It took three hours for the police to trace the vehicles. Only five vehicles were recovered by the police and the remaining two are being tracked. Citing police sources, the daily said that the key suspect has been identified.
The robbers were trying to fix fake number plates on the vehicles, which were found abandoned at Valasaravakkam by the police. The police investigation had now revealed that a shop in Valasaravakkam supplied the number plates.
According to the police, the cars were parked earlier at Porur and were recently shifted to Manapakkam. Since it was easy for the staff to transport the vehicles they left the keys in the car, which was noticed by the robbers. Further investigations are on to nab the culprits and no arrests have been made so far. The police suspect an insiders role in the robbery.
