Presidential poll: Election to take place on July 17, counting on July 20

The Chief Election Commissioner Nasim Zaidi on Wednesday announced the date for Presidential election. Speaking at a press conference, CEC Zaidi said that the polls would be held on July 17 and the counting of votes would be conducted on July 20.

Last date for filing of nominations will be June 28, he added. Election Commission will issue further notification on June 14, while the last date for withdrawal of candidature will be July 1. EC will be conducting a scrutiny of nominations on June 29. Zaidi added that Secretary General of Lok Sabha will be the Returning Officer for the elections.

Zaidi also laid down clear notifications for the political parties to not issue whip to their MPs & MLAs in matter of voting. He also added that the voters will be provided with a particular pen with which they will have to caste their votes.

"ECI is taking all necessary steps to ensure free and fair elections to the office of President of India," Zaidi said. President Pranab Mukherejee's term expires on July 25. Elected members of Parliament and state assemblies vote in the presidential elections. The schedule of Vice Presidential Elections will be announced later by Election Commission.
