The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) registered a case regarding the gang-rape and murder of a 16-year-old girl in Shimla and started investigating the matter. The agency has also filed a case into the custodial death of the accused of gang-rape incident.
The incident drew public outrage with shops, offices and schools being closed in Shimla protesting mishandling the case.
They agency took over the cases on the orders of Himachal Pradesh High Court. The HC has asked CBI to form a special team to investigate the case.
Following the death of the accused in police custody, the state government has issued transfer orders to seven police officers who were investigating the gang-rape and murder case.
A CBI spokesperson said, "The CBI has formed a special investigation team, and inspected the scene of crime."
It was alleged that a minor girl had gone to school on July 5 but did not return home. Her body was found in the morning of July 6 from nearby forest area. On a complaint lodged by her father with Police Station Kotkhai in Shimla, an FIR was registered against unknown persons.
So far, 6 accused were arrested by the local police. Out of the six, one died under mysterious circumstances in police custody. Another case was registered with the police on this.
The main suspect, Rajendra Singh, allegedly killed one of the five men arrested with him.
The victim was sexually assaulted and murdered in an apple orchard and her body was then abandoned in the woods nearby in Kotkhai, about 55 kilometres from Shimla.
Investigators say that Rajendra Singh offered her a lift while she was walking home from school. She was then abducted.
