The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has taken over the investigation into the 2015 murder and possible rape of an 18-year-old student of Ludhiana's Teja Singh Sutantar Senior Secondary School.

The case was handed over to the probe agency by the Punjab High Court based on a request from the father of the deceased, after Punjab police failed to make any headway into the probe even after one-and-a-half years.

Twenty hours after she went missing, the naked body of the victim was fished out from Sidhwan Canal near Barewal village in early September 2015. The girl's legs were found to be tied with a piece of cloth and a post-mortem examination revealed that the girl was strangled to death.

Probe-related documents state that injuries inflicted by a sharp-edged weapon were found on the head and one of the arms of the girl.

The girl's uniform was found stuffed in her schoolbag lying on the bank of the canal and as soon as her parents had identified the body, police had filed a case of murder and conspiracy against unknown people.

An autopsy had suggested that the girl might have been allegedly raped. The CBI has however taken over the case on the bases of the original FIR which did not include rape charges.

Father of the deceased, who runs an artificial jewellery shop in Shimlapuri area, had requested for strictest action under the law against the perpetrators of the crime. In his official statement he had said the last time he saw his daughter was when he dropped her at her school on September 2, 2015.

He used to daily drop her at school on his two-wheeler, while on return she takes the company of two of her friends. On the day of the murder, her two friends were absent and after leaving school she had gone to a photocopy shop to get a book copied. That was the last time people in the area had seen her. Her body was recovered the next day.
