The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Wednesday questioned retired Lt General Tejinder Singh for the first time, in the case relating to the bribery charges alleged by Army chief General VK Singh. General VK Singh has accused Lt Gen Tejinder Singh of trying to bribe him to clear the purchase of ‘sub-standard’ Tatra trucks for the Indian Army.

CBI sources maintained the agency is expected to convert this preliminary inquiry into a regular case soon. “He was examined today in connection with our probe in the Tatra trucks deal and Army chief VK Singh’s bribery allegations,” Dharini Mishra, CBI spokesperson told DNA.

The Army chief had last month revealed in an interview to the section of media that a retired lieutenant general had offered him a Rs14 crore bribe to clear a tranche of 600 ‘sub-standard’ trucks.
Lt General Tejinder Singh (retd), on the other hand, has filed a defamation case against the Army chief in a Delhi court on the allegations made against him in a March 5 press release issued by the Army headquarters. In his petition, Tejinder Singh has claimed the press release is “completely false and concocted”.

According to sources in the federal agency, Tejinder was asked about the reasons for his visit to Army chief’s office on September 22, 2010 when the alleged bribe offer was made to Gen VK Singh.

The CBI has already recorded the Army chief’s statement last month, in which he had alleged that Tejinder Singh had offered Rs14 crore to him on behalf of Ravi Rishi of Tatra trucks. Ravi Rishi has been questioned by the CBI several times and a look out notice was also issued against him to prevent him from leaving the country.

On March 30, CBI registered a case in purchases of Tatra Trucks against Ravi Rishi and unknown officials of defence ministry and BEML.
