Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) director Ranjit Sinha, already facing the Supreme Court's fire for meeting many accused persons in the 2G and coal block allocation scams, on Saturday moved an application against advocates Prashant Bhushan and Kamini Jaiswal.

The application sought a direction to the police to register an FIR on the charge of perjury for making "false" statement against Sinha before the court, regarding his visitors' diary.

Prashant Bhushan and Kamini Jaiswal are appearing for the petitioner-NGO, the Centre for Public Interest Litigation (CPIL), in the 2G case before the apex court.

dna, which has access to the visitors' diary at 2 Janpath -- the official residence of Sinha -- had carried a series of stories on his meetings with the scam-accused. Sinha had also allegedly tried to derail the probe against Reliance and the Aircel-Maxis cases.

What is Sinha's contention?
Sinha's contention is that, on affidavit, CPIL said Bhushan got a copy of the entry register from a reliable source, but orally he told the court on September 8 that some unknown persons had given them the diary. Sinha argues this is contradictory to Bhushan's earlier submission.

What is Bhushan's reply?
"What the CBI director mistakes is that we had filed copies of the entry register on September 2, 2014, which we got from a reliable source, whereas we had stated on September 7 that some unknown persons delivered us the "original" copy of the register. This has been submitted to the court on September 8, 2014. The court now has the original hand-written copy of the register in its safe custody," said Bhushan.

What did Sinha's application say?
"Direct the concerned police station to register an FIR against Bhushan and Jaiswal for making deliberate and intentional false statement on oath and before this court in the proceedings. The affidavit, filed by Jaiswal on oath, did not refer to the fact, which was orally submitted by Bhushan ... that on the night of September 7, 2014, some unknown persons had come to his residence and had handed over the original entry register/guest register of the residential establishment of the Director of the Central Bureau of Investigation," the application said.

What else did Sinha say?
The CBI director also raised questions about the prosecutability of the entire case against former telecom minister Dayanidhi Maran in the Aircel- Maxis deal and referred it to attorney general twice and denied that he had not said "no case was made out" against Maran. He also raised objection to the petitioner's plea on investigating officer Sandeep Rastogi's transfer saying that he was not the "lead investigator".

Is this the first case?
No. This is the second application filed against Jaiswal. Earlier, the CBI has filed a perjury case against her for filing an affidavit with wrong facts.
