BRICS 2016: India, South Africa decide to strengthen cooperation in UNSC

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Saturday said on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit in Goa, Prime Minister Narendra Modi thanked South African President Jacob Zuma for the statement he had issued after the terrorist attack in Uri, and greatly appreciated the solidarity that South African had shown on this very important subject.

"He (PM Modi) said terrorism is a global phenomenon and it needs global action. In this context, he called for strengthening cooperation between India and South Africa in the United Nation Security Council (UNSC) forum in dealing with terrorism which is the 1267 committee," MEA spokesperson Vikas Swarup Swarup said.

Briefing the media on the bilateral meeting between the two leaders, Swarup said, "He (PM Modi) also called for working on the early adoption of the comprehension conviction on international terrorism, which was proposed by India way back in 1996."

He said Prime Minister Modi commended South Africa for the tremendous contribution it has made to the BRICS grouping, adding that President Zuma called for expanding areas of cooperation between the two countries and simplification of the visa regime. "President Zuma said India and South Africa have had a long relationship. The need now is to grow and deepen it even further. President Zuma said on the bilateral side we needed to expend our corporation in areas which has renewable energy, higher education and he also called for simplification of the visa regime between the two countries," he added.

PM Modi also thanked President Zuma on South Africa's support to India on the Nuclear Suppliers' Group and hoped that it would continue its support. Swarup further said there were discussion on trade and ties between the two countries, and both the countries acknowledged that the current volume of trade and investment were low and much more could be done to increase it.

"Both leaders also acknowledge the relevance of IBSA (India, Brazil South Africa grouping), which are three major democracy and three major continents, saying they must have more frequent meetings," he added.

"President Zuma alluded two important milestones which were coming up: first was the 20th anniversary of the signing of the Red Ford declaration; and, the second was South Africa-India joint Ministerial Commission, which is schedule to take place in New Delhi in 2017," said Swarup.
