Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday launched 'Indira Canteens', one of Karnataka government's most ambitious projects to serve affordable food.

Rahul Gandhi inaugurated the first canteen on Kanakanapalya main Road in Bengaluru's Jayanagar. A total of 101 Indira Canteens are being rolled out, serving breakfast at Rs 5 and lunch and dinner at Rs 10.

"Proud that it is a Congress government that conceptualised this canteen. Breakfast to be served in Rs 5 and lunch/dinner at Rs 10," the Congress leader said.

Stating that Indira Canteen is another step towards the 'Food for All' commitment of the Congress, Rahul Gandhi said, "I congratulate the Karnataka government for this initiative. It is very important that every single person in this country has a full stomach."

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah took to Twitter, terming it to be a 'historic day' in Karnataka's fight against 'hunger and malnutrition.'

"Indira Canteen will play a significant role in alleviating urban hunger, especially helping the working class and migrant labour in #NammaBengaluru," he added.

Karnataka Chief Minister had announced this project when he presented the budget on March 15, this year.
