Taking steps: Singer Nikhil D' Souza will performing at a concert to create awareness against the alarming rise in the drug abuse
Fight against the drug abuse in the militancy hit Kashmir has got a Bollywood push. Thanks to Nikhil D' Souza, the singer of Jannat 2 and Anjaana Anjaani fame will be performing at the Sukoon concert on Saturday to create awareness against the alarming rise in the drug abuse in the restive valley.
Organised by a group of seven school students under the aegis of loudbettle.in, the Sukoon concert is aimed at highlighting the ill-effects of the drug abuse in a bid to keep off the young generation from this menace.
"It is an anti narcotics show. We are trying to create awareness among the people about the drug abuse. We are screening a short documentary on the drug abuse. There will short play on the ill-effects of drug abuse followed by comedy show. Later Nikhil will be performing before the live audience at the convocation hall of Kashmir University", said Shoaib Mir, one of the class XII students who are organising the show.
Nikhil will be performing for around an hour and sing different hit numbers to pep up the audience. "We are expecting 900 to 1200 people at the show. The response is very good. Hopefully it will be a success," said Mir
The concert is being organised at a time when a whole new generation is falling apart by the drug abuse in the Kashmir valley. Charas, brown sugar, cocaine, cannabis, psychotropic drugs etc are the new weapons of mass destruction for the younger generation in strife torn Jammu and Kashmir.
Last year Jammu and Kashmir police registered 42 cases against 63 drug peddlers and recovered large amount of contrabands from them in the capital city of Srinagar alone. Figures released by police reveal around 13682 contraband tablets and capsules, 823 intoxicant bottles, 21 kg poppy, 12.587 kg charas and 22 grams of brown sugar was recovered in 2014.
"Drug addiction is taking serious shape in Kashmir. More than 10,000 patients have visited the drug de-addiction centre since its inception in 2008. There is no study about the exact number of drug addicts. Male addicts however report that they have girl friends, who too are into drugs. Sometimes we receive the girl addicts but the number is very less," said Dr Mohammad Muzaffar Khan, head of the lone drug de-addiction centre run by J&K police.
