A day ahead of Kali Puja, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, while inaugurating the skywalk at Dakshineswar Temple in North 24 Parganas on Monday, came down heavily on the BJP saying they wear saffron but are not true to its essence.

She said the BJP indulges in politics of division and decides who would follow Hinduism.

"They try to dictate the terms regarding who or which group of people get to follow Hinduism and have now started wearing saffron to indicate that they are true Hindus. You cannot become a sadhu just by wearing 'gerua' (saffron). Clothes of that colour are available on the streets. Saffron stands for sacrifice. Those who wear 'gerua' and indulge in worldly pleasures, tell lies and wants to be in power, cannot be true saffron wearers. They are 'jhoota gerua'," Mamata said.

She named it the Dakshinewar Rani Rashmoni Skywalk, adding that the work could be completed despite all the impediments planted by the Opposition parties. "The matter had been dragged to the High Court too. Three parties – I don't want to name them – even held conventions to stop the work. I thank the judges of the High Court who had ruled in favour of the construction," the Bengal CM added.

After the inauguration, Mamata went to the garbha griha or the sanctum sanctorum of the temple and offered her prayers to the Goddess.

Built at a cost of Rs 60 crore, the skywalk is 340-m long and 10.15-m wide. The shopkeepers who had been displaced due to the project are to be accommodated in the 137 shops that have been built on the skywalk. Several utility rooms have been built there as well.

For the convenience of commuters, the skywalk will have four elevators, 14 escalators and six stair cases. Round-the-clock CCTV surveillance will be available to ensure safety and at both ends of the structure, special attention has been paid towards beautification.

The skywalk pans the railway station gate to the temple and is expected to bring down traffic congestion. It will be thrown open for public use from Tuesday morning.
