The West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo Mamata Banerjee launched a blistering attack on the ruling party at the centre – Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) for conducting Lok Sabha elections in seven phases in the state.

Banerjee while leaving the state she said, “I have great respect for the Election Commission, it’s an independent body and I will not comment on it. This is completely BJP’s handiwork for conducting seven-phased elections in the states. It seems they have decided everything for Bengal. What is the logic behind this? It’s a BJP game plan carefully chalked out in the BJP party office to disturb Bengal. But I’m confident of getting all 42 seats. We have no problems, we are ready. Our candidates list is also ready and we will announce it tomorrow,” she said, adding, “The places where polls are being conducted in seven phases are - Bengal, Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. Uttar Pradesh is a big state, it has 80 seats, we have 42 seats and Bihar has 40 seats. These three states are going to be game changers.”

She further added that weather during the months in which elections may cause inconvenience to voters. “The weather is not favorable for such a long-drawn election – there will be heat and nor’ westers causing inconvenience to voters.”

Banerjee said that she has heard from her journalist sources that the government was preparing for another strike. “I have information from senior journalist that the government is preparing for a so called strike in the month of April. Hence polls will continue till May 19.”

Hours after the Election Commission of India (ECI) announced the elections on Sunday, opposition parties including the Trinamool Congress raised questions on the timing of the elections being conducted in the month of Ramzaan. Trinamool Congress minister and Kolkata mayor, Firhad Hakim said that it was attempt to keep people belonging to minority community away from voting.

“Elections are being conducted in the Ramzaan month. This is to prevent the people belonging to minority community from casting their votes,” said Hakim.
