PM Modi has been vocal against triple talaq

The alacrity with which Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP chief Amit Shah hailed the Supreme Court decision on triple talaq as “historic” and a “resolute step towards New India” may suggest that the BJP is looking at it as a factor that could bolster its poll prospects in 2019 by garnering sympathy votes from a sizeable chunk of Muslim women.

But several top BJP leaders do not agree with this simplistic logic. They admit that the Muslims vote share for the BJP is not going to increase anytime soon.

“The vote share will remain static at 2 per cent or less for another decade. This step is just the beginning of our attempts to alter the political status quo as it puts the liberal Left and Congress and many other parties in a dilemma – how to respond to it. This gives us advantage among those who think about parity, equality and constitutional rights,” said a senior BJP leader.

Look what Amitji has said, he said, quoting that “it a resolute step towards New India and the majority verdict is not a defeat or win for anyone but is a victory of rights to equality and fundamental Constitutional rights.”

Explaining it further the leader said, no solid commitment to the just cause by other political parties will force people within the majority community to think who is liberal and want the Muslim community to prosper – BJP or others?

“This issue if not tackled properly by opposition parties can help drive liberal minded people among the majority community towards us. We will keep maintaining that this is changing India and has nothing to with religion or faith at all. One will have to see it from the point of view of gender justice and gender equality,” he added.

Another senior leader said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s statements on triple talaq made earlier and now this decision has sent out a clear message that the BJP is interested in emancipation of Muslims and not in appeasing them.

“This will pay the BJP dividends not today but may be 10 or 15 years later, when new crop of more modern youngsters will be there and look back. Our party will keep pushing for more such progressive steps among the Muslim community. One could not have thought this kind of decision to come 20 years ago but today it is not only being accepted but hailed as a monumental decision,” he said.
