Senior Congress leader and former minister BK Chandrashekar on Tuesday slammed the BJP for vitiating academic atmosphere in university campuses by appointing BJP and RSS workers as syndicate members of all universities in the state.
Speaking to reporters, Chandrashekar said the professors who are also progressive thinkers are being targeted by these syndicate members. Prof Rajendra Chenni and Prof Vimalesh have suffered at the hands of these political nominees, he said.
At present, TH Chandrashekariah of Hampi University is being targeted by the RSS and BJP men. “Chandrashekaraiah had not brought to the notice of the syndicate a UNESCO project. Now, the members are demanding to sack him from the service. He is the most forward-looking social scientist and the syndicate can’t go this far for the mistake,” he opined.
Chandrashekar urged the government to amend the Karnataka Universities Act, 1992, to give the authority of appointing registrar to the university and its syndicate. “An IAS officer should be appointed as the registrar,” he said. The amendment is necessary to prevent confrontation between V-C and registrars in universities, he stated. Now, maintaining law and order in the campus has become a big challenge, he said.
Chandrashekar lamented that Tumkur University is giving an impression that it is established to give honorary PhD degrees to powerful people. “Tumkur University has become a joke by its deeds. The quality of education should be improved,” he said.
