All it would take now to become a member of the BJP is a phone call or an SMS.

On November 1, when the party launches a mega membership drive across the country hoping to consolidate support it got in elections, the first to become a member through an SMS will be prime minister Narendra Modi. Party president Amit Shah will make him a member by sending an SMS and then Modi will make Shah the second member of the party.

Though the exercise is undertaken every six years and party members have to get a new membership, this time it has simplified the procedure to make it easier for people to get their membership registered. "The earlier traditional procedure for membership will continue but now we have simplified it and removed bottlenecks," party general secretary JP Nadda said.

While the party generally targets around a 20 per cent increase in its membership, this time it will "break all past records," Nadda said. The party is again banking on the support it drew during elections under Modi's leadership to increase its membership. Asked about any screening process, he said the party was giving priority to increasing its membership and those registered will be linked to the booths. At present the party membership figure stands at 3.15 crore.

The BJP has decided to use phones and internet in the six-month drive under the slogan "Sashakt Bhajpa, Sashakt Bharat (strong BJP, strong India)" and "Saath aayein, Desh banayein (come together, build the country)".
However, in poll-bound Jammu and Kashmir and Jharkhand the membership drive will take place after elections. Ahead of the drive, the BJP will hold three workshops in Bangalore, Delhi and Kolkata on October 29, 30 and 31 catering to various states.

"We got tremendous mass support during the general election and our social welfare schemes and the leadership of prime minister Narendra Modi further got people's blessings in the assembly elections in Haryana and Maharashtra. In that environment, we will try to get their support," Nadda said.
