BHU teacher recalls Saturday horror, says 'police kept on beating us'

On a day when the chief proctor of BHU resigned amid growing pressure, an Assistant Professor has revealed the horrors of September 23rd lathicharge on the girl students on the campus.

Pratima Gond, an Assistant Professor of Sociology at BHU's Mahila Maha Vidyalaya, told the Indian Express how she was assaulted by the policemen on that fateful night.

Recalling the horror, Gond said that she wanted to help a girl who had fallen on the ground during the lathicharge.

She was also trapped in the chaos. Gond said that she kept on telling the cops that she was a teacher, yet they kept on beating her.

She said that there was no violence at the protest and the policemen didn't listen to anyone.

The visibly shaken teacher sustained injuries on her arms and hands as she tried to save her from the assault.

The statement is in stark contrast to the BHU administration's narrative that there were students from the outside and they were throwing stones and petrol bombs at the Vice-Chancellor GC Tripathi's house.

The use of brute force on the non-violent protest by the girl students demanding action in an alleged molestation case has changed the history of the 100-year-old BHU.

Never in the past, did the students came out in open against the university officials.

Varanasi Police Commissioner Nitish Gokarn's report has also blamed the BHU authorities for mishandling the situation.

The report also points out that the administration didn't act on time.
