Bengaluru: Attempted kidnapping of woman caught on CCTV camera, police detain one person

The victim alleged that the police were informed about the incident.

Bengaluru police is investigating the attempted abduction of a 25-year-old woman from Manipur in the city. The incident allegedly took place on April 23 in Channammanakere Achchukattu police station limits in Bengaluru South. The police swung into action when the victim approached a local TV channel with CCTV footage. ANI reported that one person has been detained by the police in connection with the case.

The victim alleged that the police were informed about the incident soon after the accused noticed people gathering at the spot and fled. According to the victim’s version, given to the local TV channel, the police visited the spot but did nothing. Meanwhile, the police claim that neither the victim nor the owner of the paying guest (PG) accommodation, where the victim used to stay, filed a complaint at the police station. According to the police, the victim alleged that she was attending a phone call near the PG when a stranger wearing a cap came to the spot and took her to the nearby building that is under construction.

Home Minister Dr G Parameshwar has promised to look into the matter. “I am getting more information on this complaint. I will take action against the police if there any lapses on their part,’’ Parameshwar said.

Meanwhile, Lokesh Kumar, Deputy Commissioner of Police (South Division) had convened an emergency meeting with police officers. “It has been found that the police visited the spot and also asked the girl to file a complaint but she has not filed the complaint. If we found any negligence of police in registering a case , we will take action against them,’’ Lokesh Kumar said.

The police have registered a case under Section 365 (kidnapping or abducting with intent to secretly and wrongfully to confine person), 354A (physical contact and advances involving unwelcome and explicit sexual overtures), 341 (punishment for wrongful restraint) and 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt) of Indian Penal Code.
