In his monthly radio address, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had asked people to shun single-use plastic and free India from plastic waste. PM Modi has also requested the corporate sector to innovate projects or products that helps achieving this. Taking cue from this message, an airport road in a Bengaluru will be constructed using plastic. In a pilot project, Bengaluru International Airport Limited (BIAL) is set to use close to 50tonnes of plastic water to build a 50 kilometre road around the Kempegowda International Airport (KIA).

The IT city of Bengaluru generates close to 6,000 tonnes of garbage every single day.

"We have herd every state is experimenting with mixing plastic with bitumen for laying of the road. This is the first time we are using plastic for building roads. This initiative is part of our sustainability programme. As you are aware the Bengaluru International Airport has pioneered water conservation activities, green energy usage and even rain water harvesting. Plastic roads have better shelf life," said Venkataramana, HR(Corporate Affairs), BIAL.

Apart from finding a sustainable solution to disposing plastic, the mixture is also said to increase the longevity of the road threefold. The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), has handed over 5,000 tonnes of plastic waste so far and is expected to give 6,000 tonnes more. The 5,000 tonnes of plastic will be used on a small stretch of road on a pilot basis, following which more detailed plans will be drawn to procure more plastic. BIAL is also exploring the option of sourcing the plastic from citizens. "Currently we are thinking of using this for about 50km within our BIAL premises. We will first use what BBMP has given us for a small stretch. We will test it for a stipulated period. It is mainly recycled plastic. We are not using fresh plastic for the project. This plastic can be used along with the aggregate and mixed at a certain temperature," said Raju Kaval, Dy Chief Project Officer, BIAL.

BIAL claims to have recently conducted laboratory tests by blending plastic with bitumen and the results were found to be acceptable for road construction.
