The woman sports secretary of a college students’ union has alleged that the general secretary of the same union had beaten her up after she refused to give in to his request of sexual favours. Interestingly both the alleged victim and accused belong to TMCP, the students’ wing of the ruling Trinamool Congress party.

The incident happened at Bidhan Chandra College at Rishra in Hooghly district of West Bengal. The girl, a final year student, alleged that on December 4, 2017, general secretary of the students’ union, Sahid Hassan Khan, son of an influential TMC leader of the district, Jahid Hassan Khan, had slapped, punched and kicked her inside the union room of the college. “I have been harassed physically, mentally and sexually earlier. He had also asked me for a physical relationship with him. On that day he asked me to hand him over my phone. He wanted to see who I talked to. When I refused, he landed a tight slap on my face. Then he pushed me, kicked me on my stomach and holding me by my hair, thrust me out of the union room. He had also threatened to kill me with the help of goons and said nothing would happen to him as his father is a TMC leader,” she said.

She also alleged of misappropriation of cash against him. “During sports and other activities of the college, he used to take money from school authorities against fraud bills,” she alleged.

The girl had put in a complaint with the SDPO, at Chandannagar Police Commissionerate, as she said that she did not trust the school principal because of his closeness to Sahid’s father. “I had earlier complained to the principal as well but no step was taken against him,” she added. College authorities, after looking at the CCTV footage of the union room swung into action. An internal investigation has been started by a committee of the college and members of the committee inspected the union room twice to match it with visuals of the CCTV. Principal of the college, Ramesh Kar said they were looking into the matter and an investigation was on to find out the truth.

TMCP state president Jaya Dutta said that Sahid had been asked been asked to put in his papers as the general secretary of the college. State education minister Partha Chatterjee said on Thursday, “It is an old footage but it is an unfortunate incident nevertheless. I have asked the TMC district president Tapan Dasgupta to put in a detailed report of the incident and after that strict action would be taken against the offender.”

Sahid, however, brushed aside all allegations saying, “She (the complainant) had come into the union room in an inebriated state. I didn’t beat her up. I had just pushed her aside and asked her to go home.” CCTV footage, however, showed Sahid slapping, kicking and pushing the girl out. Leaders of Opposition parties described it as part of the prevailing ‘goondaraj’ in the state colleges and that many other such incidents go unreported.
