Ayushman Bharat, world’s biggest healthcare programme, has become an instant hit. Within 24 hours of its Sunday launch, the ‘Modicare’ has registered 1,000 patients, a latest media report said.

According to a Times of India report, the scheme has benefitted over 1,000 patients mainly based in Jharkhand and Haryana. Interestingly, a baby born in Jamshedpur’s East Singbhum Hospital became the first beneficiary of the Ayushman Bharat scheme.

On Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had launched the Ayushman Bhart scheme at a mega event in Ranchi.

"No other country is the world has such a large-scale healthcare programme. The total number of beneficiaries is more than the population of America, Canada and Mexico put together,” he said. We have brought such a big scheme to people in a span of six months,” PM Modi had said during the launch event.

Modicare, as the scheme is popularly known, is slated to provide cashless and paperless access to services for the beneficiary at the point of service.

PM Modi has described Ayshman Bharat as ‘game-changer’ scheme for the poor. He had also said that more than 13,000 hospitals were added as part of the PMJAY.

A helpline number 14555 for the Ayushman Scheme was also launched on Sunday at the event. The scheme will provide a cover of up to Rs 5 lakh per family per year, for secondary and tertiary care hospitalisation. Over 10.74 crore vulnerable entitled families (approximately 50 crore beneficiaries) will be eligible for these benefits.

However, the scheme has also found its detractors with as many as five states rejecting it. Five states - Telangana, Odisha, Delhi, Kerala and Punjab - stayed out of the ambitious healthcare scheme. They have said they will not implement PM Modi’s ambitious programme until their concerns are addressed since they have better health assurance schemes.
