Starting today motorists plying on the National Highways will have to shell out towards toll.

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has revised the toll rates by 5% to 7% in sync with Wholesale Price Index (WPI).

The percentage in increase of toll rates would vary on different highways, on some corridors it will be 5%, while or others it will be 6 and 7%. Even the monthly and daily trip passes will face a similar rate revision.

Due to the revision in toll prices, there is likelihood of a cascading effect on goods due to increasing toll rates as well as regular revision in fuel prices, insurance premiums and e-way bill implementation.

At present, the NHAI has 372 toll plazas being operated directly or indirectly by the authority.

The transporters have been pressing the government to levy an annual or one time toll charge in order to cut down on waiting time at the toll plazas.

However, the government hasn’t accepted the suggestion, instead Fastag has been introduced. Now, the government on a pilot basis is also in the process of introducing Pay-As-You-Use toll on Delhi-Mumbai National Highway.
