Going beyond their regular administrative skills training for running the bureaucracy, this batch of 178 young IAS officers for the first time learned some skills of reel life as well. For the first time ever, Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) conducted a film appreciation course for the trainee IAS officers at the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration (LBSNAA) in Musoorie.

Highlight of this first-ever three days film appreciation course from June 21 to June 23 was the interactive session conducted by veteran actors Naseeruddin Shah and Ratna Pathak Shah. Speaking about the course, Bhupendra Kainthola, director of FTII told DNA: "The film appreciation course in FTII was started in 1975, but it took us nearly 43 years to reach to the premier institute of LBSNAA in Musoorie. Nevertheless, we have now made inroads with the first course for the 2016 batch of IAS officers and we are hoping to have a long association with the LBSNAA with similar courses."

The course was a part of FTII's country-wide film education outreach initiative, Skill India in Film and Television. During the course, national award winning actor Divya Dutta and noted editor and course director Sankalp Meshram too held sessions for the officers to give some basic idea about cinema. Along with the 178 IAS trainee officers, three trainee officers of Royal Bhutan Civil Service also attended the course.

Speaking about the idea behind designing the course for IAS officers, Meshram said: "It is an unique idea. Through this course, we are aiming to sensitise new IAS officers about cinema."

"After spending two years at the academy, these officers will be taking charge of different positions in the bureaucracy. Some will become key policy makers related to cinema in the future. Therefore, if they know what good cinema is, they will have a good idea about how to deal with the subject."
