Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal today described Rabindranath Tagore as a great humanist and said Tagore made indelible contribution to glorify Indian literature at the world stage.

He was speaking at a Rabindra Jayanti celebration organised by the Greater Guwahati Rabindra Jayanti Celebration Committee in association with the Directorate of Cultural Affairs.

The Assam government would hold seminars on Rabindra Jayanti across all districts in the state from next year, the chief minister said.

Paying rich tribute to the Nobel laureate on the occasion of Rabindra Jayanti here today, Sonowal said Rabindranath Tagore brought an intellectual stimulus to the national freedom movement.

His contributions surpassed the national boundary and earned acclaim from the world community.

Recollecting Tagore s contribution to Indian literature and his association with Assam, the chief minister said that the legend inspired generations of Assamese litterateurs.

The chief minister also said steps would be taken to promote artists who practice Rabindra Sangeet.

He said the youth must know about Rabindranath Tagore and his invaluable creations.
