In a stinging attack, Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Monday slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the string of heinous crimes involving minor girls.

‘PM should fast track these cases and punish the guilty if he is serious about providing “justice for our daughters”,’ Gandhi tweeted just a while ago.

He also gave the gruesome crime records. According to the Congress chief, ‘there were 19,675 rapes of minor children reported in 2016. This is shameful.’

The Congress have stepped up its attack on the Modi government after the spate of brutal gangrapes and murders in Kathua, Unnao and Surat.

Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala had gone to an extent where he said that in Unnao UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath was the real culprit.

On Friday, the Congress had also led a midnight march at the India Gate to talk about Centre’s failure in protecting the ‘daughters of India.’

On Friday, PM Modi assured the country that the guilty would not be shielded, but he has been criticised for failing to speak out sooner.

Before leaving for an official visit to Europe this week, the Prime Minister received a letter from 50 former civil servants upbraiding the country's political leadership over its weak response.

"The bestiality and the barbarity involved in the rape and murder of an eight year old child shows the depths of depravity that we have sunk into," the letter said.

"In post-Independence India, this is our darkest hour and we find the response of our government, the leaders of our political parties inadequate and feeble."

Meanwhile, Congress leader Kamal Nath on Monday said the name of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) should be changed to ‘Balatkar Janata Party’.

Addressing the media on Kathua and Unnao rape cases, the Congress leader said, ‘I read it somewhere that around 20 leaders of the BJP are linked with rape cases. Now the people should consider changing the name of the party from the Bharatiya Janata Party to Balatkar Janata Party.’

Recently, the BJP MLA from Unnao Kuldeep Singh Sengar was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on the charges of raping a minor last year.

An FIR was lodged against the BJP MLA last Thursday under sections 363 (kidnapping), 366 (abduction of woman), 376 (rape), 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
