Arrested for raping 12-year-old neighbour, Chandigarh salesman turns out to be a habitual offender

When Chandigarh Police arrested Shammi Kumar, little did they know that it would unmask a habitual offender.

Kumar was arrested by the police from Daddu Majra colony in Chandigarh. He is accused of raping his 12-year-old neighbour, The Hindustan Times report said on Thursday. 

While the heinous crime is still being investigated, Kumar’s interrogation revealed that he has sexually assaulted minor girls in past also.

According to the media report, the supermarket salesman confessed of molesting more girls in last two years.

‘The accused, Shammi Kumar, a salesman at Bansal Superstore in Sector 7, Chandigarh, has confessed to sexually assaulting more minor girls living in his neighbourhood over the past two years,’ sub-inspector Ashok said was quoted as saying by the HT report.

The class 6 student was raped inside her home while her parents were away for work. The incident took place on Wednesday. After much hesitation, the girl finally broke her silence and told her parents about it. The police also said that the accused has a 16-year-old ‘girlfriend’. 

On Thursday, a local court in Chandigarh sent the accused to a 14-day judicial custody. 

However, Kumar’s family is supporting him and says that the 21-year-old has not done anything and has been falsely implicated. 

According to a 2015 report by the National Crime Records Bureau, 34,651 rape case were reported in India. The rape victims were among the age group of below six years to over 60 years. According to the 2015 data, Punjab reported 2,164 rape cases.
