The Army wants to modernise its military stations along the lines of a 'smart city' that encompasses better roads, parking facilities, waste disposal, underground electricity cables.

Estimated to cost the taxpayer around Rs 8.5 crore, the Army has sought 15 per cent additional funds for a period of five years to implement the plan.

The subject was discussed at the ongoing Army Commander's Conference in Delhi where the top brass of the force is deliberating several aspects that impact the Army, ranging from operational capabilities to welfare issues.

"There is a need to modernise military stations at par with a smart city. The plan has been wholesomely deliberated for pan-Army implementation," the Army said in a statement.

Launched in 2015 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Smart City Mission aims at promoting sustainable and inclusive cities that provide core infrastructure and a clean and sustainable environment and application of 'smart' IT solutions. The mission is to be implemented in 100 cities and benefit about 13 crore urban population. Some of the core infrastructure elements of a smart city include adequate water supply, electricity, sanitation, including solid waste management, efficient urban mobility and public transport, affordable housing, especially for the poor, robust IT connectivity and digitisation, good governance and sustainable environment.

Now, the Army wants to emulate the same for their military stations. "Some of them have been already been identified and if the funds are allocated, the work on these will start soon," Army sources said.
