Indian Army averted a major terror strike on Wednesday night. Improvised Explosive Device (IED) and two land mines were recovered near the highly-fortified garrison at Akhnoor in the Jammu division.

Colonel NN Joshi, defence spokesman, Northern Command said the sentries observed suspicious movement close to the unit location near Akhnoor Market on Wednesday night. "Thereafter, the response mechanism was activated wherein the entire area was cordoned off and a deliberate search operation was conducted. While sanitising the area, the security forces used a dog squad and recovered one fully installed IED, two mines, army accouterments and other incriminating stores," he said.

Combing operations, along with the police, are in progress and a massive hunt has been launched to nab the terrorists who had planted the IEDs and land mines. "We have put all our forces on alert and a hunt has been launched to identify and neutralise the militants responsible for planting the explosives," said an army officer.

The foiled terror attack comes three days after security forces repulsed a Pathankote-type terror attack where three Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) fidayeens were neutralised soon after they stormed the highly-fortified Border Security Force (BSF) camp, neighbouring Srinagar International Airport, and Air Force Station. An Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI) of BSF was killed and three others were injured in the operation that lasted for 10 hours.

Meanwhile, the two-day visit of Minister of State for Defence Dr Subhash Bhamre to Jammu region concluded on Thursday.

During his visit to the forward posts along the Line of Control, he interacted with soldiers and was briefed by the General Officer Commanding of Crossed Swords Division and local commanders about the defence preparedness and efforts being undertaken to thwart any misadventure by the adversary in this region.

"He (Dr Bhamre) emphasised that the national leadership and the government is fully-sensitive to the problems faced by the soldiers while operating in such difficult and arduous conditions. He assured that all support will be provided to ensure that the Army is operationally fully equipped to deal a telling blow to the adversary as and when required," Colonel Joshi said.
