The blistering heat and bypolls being held close to the 2019 elections kept many voters indoors as the polling percentage plunged in several constituencies compared to the last elections.

In the Kairana Lok Sabha seat of Uttar Pradesh that had polled 73.05 per cent during the height of Modi wave in 2014 elections, the polling came down appreciably to a meagre 54.17 per cent despite a blitz rally by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in bordering Baghpat on the penultimate day.
In the Noorpur assembly constituency of UP too, the polling percentage came down from 66.82 per cent in 2017 assembly polls to 61 per cent.

The fall in polling percentage in Kairana is being interpreted by opposition parties as waning of Modi wave and anger against anti-people policies of the BJP government.

The reason, however, could also be lack of interest among Muslim voters, especially women, to face the heatwave at the time of fasting in the month of Ramzan.

The faulty EVMs and VVPATs also added to the reason.

The voting percentage also plunged in Bhandara Gondiya and Palghar Lok Sabha constituencies in Maharashtra. In Bhandara-Gondiya where NCP and Congress are fighting unitedly against the BJP, it fell down to a meagre 42 per cent against 72.3 per cent in 2014 while in Palghar it slipped from 62.9 per cent in 2014 to 46 per cent.

The North eastern states, however, continued their tradition of high polling with Meghalaya recording 90.42 per cent turnout. Though Nagaland polled 75 per cent, it was much less than 2014 when the turnout was 87.82 per cent.

In the Left dominated Chengannur assembly seat in Kerala where BJP is trying to make inroads, the turnout was a healthy 77 per cent. Shahkot assembly seat in Punjab also witnessed good turnout of 76.6 per cent.

Whatever be the turnout of voters, the elections results of these by polls are being seen with keen interest by the political parties as a barometer before the 2019 Lok Sabha elections and would be dissected and analysed to fine tune their election strategy in coming months.
