Another gangster who aided Nabha jail break arrested

A gangster who played a key role in the sensational Nabha jailbreak was nabbed in Patiala district on Wednesday.

The accused, Sukhchain Singh alias Sukhi, was arrested by the Organised Crime Intelligence Unit (OCIU) of Intelligence Wing of Punjab Police from Nabha Sangrur Road. The police recovered a country-made pistol 30 bore and a licenced .32 bore revolver from him along with 630 grams of intoxicants in powder form.

Six gangsters had escaped from the high-security Nabha jail on November 27, last year. Four of them — Harminder Singh alias Mintoo, Gurpreet Singh Sekhon, Kulpreet Singh Neeta and Aman Dhotia — were arrested, while two including Vicky Gounder are still at large.

AIG Gurmeet Singh Chauhan said that Singh was an accomplice of Gurpreet Singh Sekhon, the mastermind, and had remained behind bars along with Sekhon at Bathinda Jail in 2014, where they got acquainted.

Singh had also remained an accomplice of Mani Sekhon, brother of Gurpreet Sekhon and had been maintaining links with gangsters in Bathinda Jail and other fugitive gangsters. "He has played a very important role in Nabha jail break and during the incident had fired shots upon entering the Nabha jail," said Chauhan.

Apart from Nabha jail break, Singh is an accused in several other cases including robbery and attempt to murder and was out on bail from Sangrur since last year in one such criminal case.

The police have so far arrested 22 other accomplices who were allegedly involved the jail break and had acted as conspirators, attackers and facilitators namely Palwinder Pinda, Bikkar, Jagatbir, Chanpreet Channa, Manveer Mani, Rajwinder Raju and Sukchain Singh alias Sukhi, Gurpreet Singh Mangewal, Mohammad Asim, Sunil Kalra, Ranjeet and Harjot. Fourteen pistols, nine cars and 500 rounds of ammunition, walkie talkie sets have been recovered till now.
