It seems that Benares Hindu University authorities haven't done enough to curb the harassment of their female students on campus. Another case of harassment was reported late Thursday after a girl returning to her hostel room was slapped on the head, and subsequently catcalled by three unidentified motorcycle-borne individuals

The girl shouted for help and immediately informed the BHU authorities, including the first lady Chief Proctor Prof Royana Singh. A search was conducted for the motorcycle-borne miscreants in campus till late Thursday night by security guards, without any luck.

“They could not be traced. We are also retrieving CCTV footage to identify the three youth,” said Prof Singh.

The victim told her hostel inmates that the three youth first made some inaudible remarks and when she did not react they slapped her on head from behind - the impact of which caused her to nearly lose balance and fall down.  They sped away when she raised an alarm.

After the incident, the Chief Proctor held a meeting to beef up security arrangements again on campus. “We have decided to post more women security guards near girls’ hostel. Strict instructions have been given to security guards to allow only those in the campus who carry identity cards,” Prof Singh told mediapersons.

Ironically, the incident took place near the girls’ hostel which was illuminated recently with LED lights after the September 23 violence in the campus following molestation of a girl two days ago.

The BHU authorities claimed to have posted about half a dozen women guards also in and around the girls’ hostels to prevent any eve-teasing incident. Despite elaborate security arrangements, fresh incident of eve-teasing has once again raised serious doubts over safety and security of female students in the campus.

This is the third incident of eve-teasing and molestation in the BHU campus in less than a month. The first incident had taken place on September 21 when two miscreants had molested a female student.

When then BHU Vice-Chancellor Prof G.C. Tripathi did not act on victim’s complaint, agitated girls held massive dharna the next day resulting in large-scale violence and police lathicharge on September 23 night. Following national outcry on BHU V-C inaction over safety and security of girls, the V-C was forced to go on leave.

Another incident was reported from within the campus on October 5 when a married female student had lodged a police complaint against a student who abused and assaulted near her classroom. Prompt action was taken and the male student was taken into police custody.

Besides posting six women guards, about 52 CCTV cameras at strategic surveillance points and 30 LED lights were installed to remove all dark spots within the campus, particularly in and around girls’ hostels since these incidents. But despite that BHU campus remained unsafe for female students.
