Andhra Pradesh: Upper castes in Vijayawada say no to reservation

They will stage a dharna on September 15 in front of the collector’s office.

Representatives from seven upper castes gathered in Vijayawada , on Wednesday, to protest the reservations for SCs, STs and BCs, The New Indian Express reports. The members highlighted how these reservations will have an impact on the youth of the upper caste and demanded a reservation system based on income.

The representatives also demanded that the Centre appoint a Supreme Court judge to head a commission to look into this. According to them, reservation should not be caste or religion-based but such that it cuts across all sections of society.

According to the report, the seven upper castes that were represented were the Brahmins, Khatriyas, Vysya, Kammas, Reddys, Velamas and Kapus. These together form the Agra Kula Ikya Vedika which will stage a dharna on September 15 in front of the collector’s office.

The Agra Kula Ikya Vedika convenor and All India Brahmin Federation chief advisor Kota Sankara Sarma state to the media that reservations should benefit anyone irrespective of caste. He added that all SCs and STs are not poor and all upper castes are not affluent. This was a misconception he stated.
