The recent recipient of the Presidential National Award, Pranay Burde (26) is not only a national icon on Tuesday but also the favorite at the city's Leela Kempinski Hotel. The young lad from Andheri, who suffers from Down's syndrome, has emerged as the Best Employee in mental retardation category. The award, which was conferred on him in New Delhi on the World Disability Day on December 3, is a token of appreciation for Pranay's earnest efforts to overcome his shortcomings and perform consistently.

"I was ecstatic when I learnt about it. I couldn't have been more proud," said Purushottam Burde, Pranay's father. Pranay is posted with the housekeeping department of the hotel where he is in charge of uniforms. Uniquely able and determined, he always wanted to work. And when he did, there was no looking back. "The staff and regulars at the five-star are more than supportive and have extended their best help to Pranay," said his mother as Pranay nodded in agreement. However, the journey hasn't been easy.

Before Pranay could prove himself, there were odds he had to get over. Time management was the worst of all. Initially he would struggle with keeping time but the support of the management and timely assistance of his family helped him achieve it in no time. "I travel alone and handle my own expenses. I don't want anything to be any different," added Pranay.

"The extensive care and active participation of the parents have made this possible. Pranay was always outgoing but I'm more than happy to see him overshadow his intellectual deformity and outshine," said Ms Sharon, teacher at the Dilkhush Special School in Juhu where Pranay studied.
