A 55-year-old man who died at a hospital in Rajasthan's Alwar district after allegedly being beaten up by a group of cow vigilantes, was not a cow smuggler but a dairy farmer, reported Indian Express.

The deceased, Pehlu Khan, and four others, including his two sons, were beaten brutally and their vans damaged by some locals at Behror who suspected they were smuggling cows on Sunday.

The incident took place when the victims were on their way towards Haryana from Jaipur on the Jaipur-Delhi national highway.

Pehlu Khan, his sons Aarif (22) and Irshad (25) were in the first van, while two more persons Ajmat (28) and Sharif (24) were in the second.

According to the report, Pehlu Khan was planning to buy a milch buffalo but decided to buy a milch cow instead, as the seller extracted 12 litres of milk in front of him and offered him a good deal.

“That was the worst decision ever. It took my father’s life,” his son Irshad told the daily.

Recounting the horror, Khan's another son said the 'gau rakshaks' stopped their vehicles, dragged them out and assaulted them with sticks and belts.

He also claimed that police arrived after 20-30 minutes after the incident.

A report also said that a person who buys milk from the smaller dairy farmers in the village confirmed that Pehlu Khan was one of his suppliers and his son Irshad had been supplying milk to him for the last four years.

Following Khan's death, a case of murder was registered against six persons namely Om Yadav, Hukamchand Yadav, Naveen Sharma, Sudhir Yadav, Rahul Saini and Jagmal, while 200 other "unidentified" people were listed as accused.

Late on Wednesday the Alwar police arrested three persons in connection with the case.
