The Allahabad High Court has sought a reply from the Director General of Police, Uttar Pradesh, and the Principal Secretary (Home) on a writ petition by suspended IPS officer Amitabh Thakur seeking a direction to the state government to transfer the investigation of a criminal case lodged against him on corruption charges.

A Lucknow division bench of justice Ajai Lamba and justice Brijesh Kumar Srivastava-ll gave this order on Friday on the petition. The petitioner alleged that the investigation into this case is not being conducted independently and sought transfer of the investigation to an "appropriate" officer. The case under Prevention of Corruption Act against Amitabh Thakur, husband of activist Nutan Thakur, was filed at Gomtinagar police station in Lucknow.

On behalf of the state government, senior advocate J N Mathur, along with advocate Rishad Murtaza, appeared and sought time for filing a counter affidavit, which was granted by the HC while listing the matter on December 12.

Amitabh Thakur, an IG-rank officer, had accused former Uttar Pradesh chief minister and ruling Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav of threatening him on phone with dire consequences.
Thakur had been suspended in July.
