The entire Opposition was suspended for the remainder of the ongoing budget session on Wednesday, after the members created a ruckus over non-tabling of the CAG report in the assembly and the sharp rise in edible oil prices. This means that the assembly will function without any Opposition members for the next two days.

The Congress MLAs displayed placards in the House criticising the government for the spike in edible oil prices. They also chanted slogans like, Modi tera kaisa khel, kha gaye zameen, pee gaye tel and Modi tere raaj me, sasta daru, mehenga tel, in the House.

Minister of state for parliamentary affairs, Pradipsinh Jadeja, said that Congress members were not allowing the House to function. He also said that they were violating assembly rules by displaying placards and were also repeatedly disobeying the Speaker. Jadeja then moved a motion seeking suspension of Congress MLAs till March 30, i.e. till the end of the session. Speaker Ganpat Vasava ordered suspension of the Opposition till March 30 after the House approved the motion through a voice vote.

Congress MLAs threw papers in the air and rushed to the well while the Speaker ordered their suspension, even as the House was adjourned for 15 minutes. The Opposition members left the House shouting slogans alleging murder of democracy in the assembly.

It may be worth mentioning here that Leader of Opposition Shaktisinh Gohil was suspended for the entire session on March 6 after his refusal to apologise before the House.

Earlier, as the House convened at noon, Opposition MLAs raised the issue of delay in tabling of CAG report, and displayed placards. The Speaker told them that such protests could not be allowed, but Opposition MLAs did not pay heed to him.

This led to the Speaker adjourning the House till the end of Question Hour.

The scene was repeated when the House reconvened at 1 pm, as Congress MLAs again resorted to slogan shouting. The House was adjourned again after just two minutes. Some sense of normalcy returned when energy minister Saurabh Patel announced an amnesty scheme for power consumers, but it was again followed by chaos, ultimately leading to suspension of the entire Opposition.

Govt seeks action for breach of propriety
After suspension of Opposition MLAs for the session, state government moved a motion alleging breach of propriety by them.

Parliamentary affairs minister Dileep Sanghani said that the CAG report was yet to be tabled before the House but leader of opposition Shaktisinh Gohil had organised a press conference and leaked parts of the report.

"It is a clear case of breach of propriety. The opposition leader disrespected the House and the opposition has been no different. This is improper behaviour," said Sanghani. Min Pradipsinh Jadeja said that opposition members had leaked the letter written to the Speaker informing him about the boycott of assembly's business advisory committee, which also amounted to breach of propriety.
