After the dismal turnout in the last three phases, all eyes are now on the fourth and final phase of the Urban Local Bodies (ULB) polls in Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday. Only two Municipal bodies of Srinagar and Ganderbal are going to polls

Except Ganderbal and Srinagar, most of the wards in south Kashmir have either been won unopposed or there are no contesting candidates. In all, 156 candidates are in fray for 37 wards of two ULBs for the fourth phase, comprising an electorate of 2,50,794.

The Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) of separatists has asked people to observe a complete protest shutdown on Tuesday in areas that are going to polls.

"As in the previous three phases, people will again demonstrate their total rejection and disregard of this futile exercise by staying away and boycotting it completely," said a spokesman of JRL.

The shutdown has been called in all the parts of Srinagar, Pattan, Ganderbal, Pampore, Khrew, Pulwama, Shopian, Dooru and Verinag.

Kashmir has witnessed a low turnout in the last three phases of polls. Around 16.4 per cent turnout was recorded in the third phase with Srinagar witnessing the lowest of 1.8 per cent polling on Saturday.

Overall turnout in the second phase of ULB polls was 31.3 per cent with Kashmir witnessing the lowest of 3.4 per cent turnout. Around 56.7 per cent turnout was recorded across Jammu and Kashmir with the Valley recording the lowest of 8.3 per cent voting in the first phase of polling.

Massive security arrangements have been made for the fourth phase of the Municipal polls. Hundreds of companies of police and paramilitary forces have been deployed for different poll related and other law and order duties in the Kashmir valley.

The Contenders

Except Ganderbal and Srinagar, most of the wards in south Kashmir have either been won unopposed or there are no contesting candidates. In all, 156 candidates are in fray for 37 wards of two ULBs for the fourth phase
