Alagiri says his supporters wants him to contest in Karunanidhi's Tiruvarur seat bypoll

With the doors shut for his re-entry into the party, expelled DMK leader and former Union Minister MK Alagiri is desperately trying hard to get back his party membership either through threat of subverting the party chances in the crucial Assembly bypoll to Tiruvarur ahead of the next year’s Lok Sabha polls or coercing the party leadership by collecting signatures of one lakh party member supporting him.

With the doors shut for his re-entry into the party, expelled DMK leader and former Union Minister MK Alagiri is desperately trying hard to get back his party membership either through threat of subverting the party chances in the crucial Assembly bypoll to Tiruvarur ahead of the next year’s Lok Sabha polls or coercing the party leadership by collecting signatures of one lakh party member supporting him.

Alagiri, after his father M Karunanidhi’s hometown Thirukuvalai in Tiruvarar district on Sunday, hinted that he might contest the Tiruvarur Assembly by-poll, necessitated by his father’s demise, as his supporters requested him in this regard.

"I have received information that some people are trying to avert a by-election. If elections happen and if I stand then I would explain to the people the injustice meted out to me regardless of whether or not I would seek people's vote," he said. He also dismissed the reports that the BJP supporting him and him having links with Rajinikanth as mere rumours.

After the death of his father and party chief M Karunanidhi, Alagiri found himself completely isolated with his younger brother and rival Stalin taking over latter’s post in the party. The Madurai strongman who was expelled from the party in 2014 when he opposed his father’s remarks declaring Stalin as his successor in the party. Ever since his attempts to make a comeback in the party was scuttled by Stalin.

Amid reports of both the brothers buried their hatchet following mediation by the family members after Karunanidhi’s death on August 7, Alagiri publicly announced his desire to get back his party membership and held a peace rally to his father’s grave as a show of strength on September 5.

As the rally failed to evoke any positive response from DMK leadership, Alagiri’s supporters have launched a signature campaign supporting his return to the party’s fold. “We are planning to get one lakh signature from the DMK members supporting Alagiri return to the party. We will submit the memorandum with one lakh signatures to party president Stalin on October 1,” P Mannan, a key leader in the Alagiri’s camp, told DNA.

A senior DMK leader on condition of anonymity said that Alagiri action’s after the demise of Kalaignar only shows is desperation to re-enter the party. “Not only Stalin but many senior leaders in DMK were also against his re-entry into the party. Many feel he will create factionalism once he is admitted into the party,” the leader said.
