The TRS government in Telangana on Tuesday came under fire from all corners in the state Assembly over the Comprehensive Household Survey (CHS) with its ally All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) warning the government against targeting people from Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema in the name of origin.

The government took pains to explain that the CHS was only intended to collect all relevant data in its efforts to build a "golden Telangana". "There need not be any apprehensions over the CHS as no benefits will be withdrawn. With the help of the data collected, the government will ensure that Telangana will get what all it lost in the last 57 years," Finance Minister Etela Rajender said.

AIMIM floor leader Akbaruddin Owaisi asked if the government would make the CHS details public or place them in the House. "The data needs to be shared with the public. More than 25 per cent households in Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation have not been covered in the survey," Owaisi said.

He warned that the MIM will not tolerate if the government sought to target people of Andhra and Rayalaseema region residing in Hyderabad and deprive them of benefits. "We are all Indians first and have the right to live anywhere in the country," he said.

The CHS issue was raised during the Question Hour by TDP member A Revanth Reddy who alleged that the survey was undertaken on August 19 by "terrorising" people.

"The survey was conducted in a haphazard manner. Lakhs of families in Mahbubnagar, Karimnagar and Nizamabad districts migrated to other places in search of work and all of them were left out in the survey.

"When the Aadhar enrolment process could be completed only about 60 per cent in two years at an expenditure of Rs 3,500 crore, what CHS achieve in just 12 hours?" Revanth asked.

Pointing out "glaring lapses" in the CHS, the TDP senior legislator cited that Nizamabad MP K Kavitha's details were enrolled both in Navipet in Nizamabad and in Hyderabad city.

BJP floor leader K Laxman and senior Congress MLA G Chinna Reddy also questioned as to why the government had to collect details again from ration cardholders and pensioners if the CHS was as comprehensive as claimed.

"The Chief Minister said there are only 84 lakh households in Telangana but the CHS established that the number is 1.01 crore. In that case there are no bogus ration cards as claimed by the government," Reddy said.

Replying to the agitated members, finance minister Rajender said the CHS might not be 100 but 90-95 per cent accurate. "Those who were left out in the survey on August 19, will be surveyed again. Our intention is not to target anyone or deprive them of benefits like ration cards. CHS is part of our effort to build a golden Telangana," he added.

The Speaker then that announced a special discussion on the issue would be taken up subsequently for 30 minutes.
